{"id":665,"date":"2013-04-13T23:59:24","date_gmt":"2013-04-14T05:59:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/premium.talkleft.com\/?p=665"},"modified":"2013-04-14T00:00:47","modified_gmt":"2013-04-14T06:00:47","slug":"ny-u-s-attorney-and-john-yoo-banned-from-russia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/premium.talkleft.com\/index.php\/ny-u-s-attorney-and-john-yoo-banned-from-russia\/","title":{"rendered":"NY U.S. Attorney and John Yoo Banned From Russia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i311.photobucket.com\/albums\/kk453\/TalkLeft\/russundesir3_zpsd5f44277.jpg\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p>Russia has responded to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/04\/13\/world\/europe\/us-issues-penalties-against-russians-for-rights-violations.html?ref=europe\"><span class=\"caps\">U.S. <\/span>issuing a list of sanctioned Russians<\/a> yesterday by putting out its own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/04\/14\/world\/europe\/russia-bars-18-americans-in-tit-for-tat-on-rights.html?_r=0\">list of <span class=\"caps\">U.S. <\/span>officials engaged in human rights violations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The list includes Bush torture memo author John Yoo and Dick Cheney&#39;s former chief of staff, David Addington, and some Guantanamo officials. I wonder why they left Dick Cheney off the list.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#39;s list also includes Preet Bharara, <span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span> Attorney for the Southern District of New York, who prosecuted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talkleft.com\/story\/2012\/4\/4\/21428\/00695\/crimenews\/-Viktor-Bout-Sentenced-to-25-Years-Judge-Rejects-Life-Sentence\">Viktor Bout<\/a> and pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.talkleft.com\/story\/2011\/4\/26\/222048\/308\/crimenews\/Jury-Acquits-Two-of-Four-Defendants-in-DEA-African-Adventures-Trial\">African drug sting<\/a> case.) <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>John Yoo&#39;s response:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Darn,&#8221; Mr. Yoo said in an e-mail. &#8220;There goes my judo match with Putin.&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I guess it&#39;s easy for Yoo to joke about this since  Russia doesn&#39;t send its cops to other countries to set up Americans and then haul them back to Russia for trial and put them in a Russian slammer for 20 years. Only the <span class=\"caps\">U.S. <\/span>and the <span class=\"caps\">DEA <\/span>do that.<\/p>\n<p>One person I don&#39;t think belongs on the list is <span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span> District Court Judge Jed Rakoff. Even though he refused to dismiss the <span class=\"caps\">DEA<\/span> African sting case, and sentenced Yaroshenko and his co-defendant to 20 and 30 years respectively, having read his rulings in the case, while I disagree with them, I think he  based his decisions on his interpretation of <span class=\"caps\">U.S. <\/span>law.  There&#39;s a difference between being wrong and acting in bad faith, and I don&#39;t think Judge Rakoff acted in bad faith. I blame <span class=\"caps\">DOJ <\/span>and the <span class=\"caps\">DEA <\/span>for that case (and for Bout, who was set up in Thailand and extradited here.) <\/p>\n<p>The 20 + Russians on the <span class=\"caps\">U.S. <\/span>list are subject to having their assets frozen and barred from entering the <span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>. If those on Russia&#8217;s list travel to Russia, they will be arrested (and held indefinitely without charges?)<\/p>\n<p>On a related note, if you haven&#39;t been watching FX&#39;s series <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fxnetworks.com\/theamericans\">&#8220;The Americans&#8221;<\/a> about <span class=\"caps\">KGB <\/span>operatives in the <span class=\"caps\">U.S. <\/span>you are missing out.
